A Bitcoin millionaire verbally abused and struggled with firefighters as they tried to tackle a major hotel fire, a court heard.

Darren Murray, 46, was dishevelled and smelling of booze when he tried to push past the firefighters at the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay, Cornwall, demanding to be let into his room.

The court was told he was heard to shout: ‘I am a millionaire. I can do what I want!’ and ‘I pay all your wages. I s*** more than you earn in a year.’

Murray, of Liskeard, Cornwall, pleaded guilty at magistrates on Monday June 18 to being drunk and disorderly in Newquay, on May 20 last year.

Alison May, prosecuting, told Truro Magistrates’ Court firefighters asked the police to intervene. The police officers then moved Murray away from the fire cordon.

She said Murray also abused the Devon and Cornwall Police officers and demanded that he be let back to his room.

The court heard Murray had failed to fill in his means form correctly, saying that he could pay any fine imposed by the court.

Murray said he had no income, stating only that he worked as a ‘block chain developer’ trading in the digital currency Bitcoin.

He was fined £750 and ordered to pay £85 court costs and £75 victim surcharge.
